At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month 1918, the first world war came to an end – ninety years ago today.
I have always been interested in the first world war and cannot comprehend how a 14 year old boy can want to join up to fight in such terrible conditions…it certainly wouldn’t happen in this day and age.
I can’t imagine having to fight in conditions today, let alone what our first world war soldiers had to endure. The fact that young men not already in the army although conscripted, still wanted to fight and did so with honour because they were proud to fight for their King and Country is something I don’t think we will ever see again. We are rarely allowed to show such patriotism in case it offends some minority society in this country. Well, what about the offence that causes to those soldiers who have served their country to ensure we stay a free society where those minority factions are allowed to be different to the mainstream.
A test of how english someone is could easily be to ask if someone accepts this – if not tell them to sod off. If they are already english, exile them. There are some in this country who need to learn how to respect and appreciate the sacrifices our great grandparents, grandparents and parents made for us.
I have enormous respect for our war heroes past and present and they should be treated with the respect they deserve.
